General Orlando M. Poe Camp 444 is chartered under the Department of Michigan, Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW).
The SUVCW organized in 1881 and chartered by Congress in 1954, is the legal heir and successor to the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) – the first major Veteran organization in the United States, founded in 1866. The GAR’s purpose was to aid fellow Union Veterans, their widows, and their orphans through their ideals of: Fraternity, Charity, and Loyalty. The GAR dissolved in 1956 when its last member died. The primary mission of the SUVCW consists of: honoring Union Veterans, preserving & perpetuating the GAR, and patriotic instruction. This includes, but is not limited to: the observance of Memorial Day, graves registration of Civil War Veterans, the preservation of Civil War Memorials, dedication ceremonies, and American patriotic and historical education.
